SONATA Consortium

SONATA is a truly interdisciplinary project and consortium. Our mission is to design and implement energetically sustainable computing and communication systems to be integrated into edge computing and beyond 5G mobile networks, encompassing all system layers and components.

The targeted sustainable design is a key and pressing interdisciplinary research endeavour, requiring professionals who understand the fundamentals of

  1. ML and mathematical optimization,
  2. electronics for low-power computing and communication,
  3. distributed computing/ learning,
  4. communication and coding theory,
  5. mobile network design and management,
  6. energy generation and storage.

Our consortium brings together research groups covering all of the above expertise. In particular, SONATA features the integration of: energy harvesting and storage solutions to gather ambient energy and use it for communication and computation tasks; design of low-power memristive technologies for energy efficient ML solutions; advanced ML algorithmic frameworks particularly targeting distributed implementations across low-power low-availability devices and over energy- and noise-limited channels; wireless communication and networking aspects to facilitate distributed learning. Hence, SONATA locates at the intersection between energy engineering, electronics, computer science, and telecommunication engineering, and our partners span all these areas.
